This is my Kris Letang primer for primerfest at [livejournal.com profile] hockeypedia. I’m finally done, and I know I’m cutting it very close to the deadline but it’s still August 1st where I am so I’m calling it a win. All images and video were found through google, youtube and tumblr searches. If I’ve linked to something of yours and haven’t given proper credit or you want it taken down please let me know.

The Basics

This is Kris Letang aka Tanger.

Notice the flow. It’s something that he’s known for. Let’s start with the basics. He was born April 24, 1987 in Montreal. According to this article his father left his mother when she was pregnant with him so he grew up with his mother and step-father and rarely saw his biological father. Also he uses his mother’s last name. He is a defenseman and played juniors in the QMJHL. He was drafted 62nd overall in the 2005 NHL draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins. As far as I can tell he’s always worn number 58. Since he was taken fairly low in the draft (1st pick of the 3rd round) and it was the draft after the lockout which was scaled back, there are sadly no pictures of him at the draft so here’s a tiny one of him from the QMJHL.

He also played at the world juniors in 2006 and 2007 (winning gold both times!) and was named the captain of the 2007 team. Here’s a picture of him in his captain jersey.

His teammates included Carey Price and Jonathan Toews. All three were named to the all-star team in 2007. Have a video of this. Link in case the embed doesn’t work.

Tanger made his NHL debut out of training camp in 2006 but was sent back to the QMJHL after 9 games. His first full season in the NHL came in 2007-2008. In 2009 he became a Stanley Cup champion when the Penguins defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the finals. Here he is with the Stanley Cup.

Kris Letang with Cup

Also he had his day with the cup. The video I found for it was in French. I have a lot of trouble with the Quebecois French so roughly; he had breakfast with the cup and with his parents and other relatives. Then he went to various places in his hometown that were significant and gave an encouraging speech to all the young hockey players in his hometown. Link.

In the 2010-2011 season, he had a career year and was voted to the NHL game as a write-in on the ballot. He scored two goals during the all-star game, one of only four defensemen to do that, but Team Staal still lost to Team Lidstrom. This is the video of him getting drafted at the all-star draft by Team Staal at the beginning of the 12th round. Link.

He also beat Duncan Keith at backwards skating in the Skills competition. Link.

Tanger also made it to the 2012 all-star game this time as an injury replacement. This is the video of him getting drafted at the all-star draft by Team Alfredsson at the end of the 5th round. Link.

This time he beat Brian Campbell at backwards skating in the Skills competition. It’s the first race in the video but the rest of the races are all entertaining especially the next race with the goalies. Link.

I’ll end this section by saying that Kris recently made an announcement that he is expecting a baby with his girlfriend. You can see the details at this post. That’s it for the overview, on to the Pictures section.

Videos

Let’s start with a video of him cutting his sticks. It’s a good explanation of how hockey players would go about preparing their sticks for games, otherwise you might find it a bit dull. Link.

This is a video from right before game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals in 2009. It features all three Quebecois Penguins players their playoff beards. They talk about how every game they played for fun was always game 7 of the Stanley cup and a bit about the Steelers. Link.

Here is a random and amusing video of Letang with Tyler Kennedy doing the weather announcements in Pittsburgh. I think they’re here promoting the DVD about the Penguins’ Stanley Cup year. In the first part Tanger decides to let Tyler Kennedy go first and the laughs at him. Tyler gets his revenge by revealing Kris’ vacation plans. Kris has some trouble speaking in French since he’s used to English when he’s in the US. In the second part the two of them block each other and the audience while giving the 14 day forecast. Part 1 & Part 2.

Finally this video is of him training during the offseason in 2011. It’s interesting to see the exactly what kind of exercises these players do to train and bulk up. Link.

This site is a really good resource for any information about Tanger and it’s got lots of really good pictures.

I’ll finish this primer with my insta-rec for fic. There isn’t a huge amount out there but Voulez-vous Coucher by [livejournal.com profile] antumbral is great and all about Kris Letang’s flow. [livejournal.com profile] antumbral also has a lot of other excellent fic that you should check out. And this ends my Kris Letang primer. Thanks for reading!
